UHAS Satellite African Regional Training Centre supported by TDR/WHO

The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) is co-sponsored by UNICEF, UNDP, the World Bank and WHO. With its new strategy, TDR aims to foster an effective global research effort on infectious diseases of poverty and promote the translation of innovation to health impact in disease endemic countries. This is implemented through two main complementary and interacting lines of activity: (i) intervention and implementation research; and (ii) research capacity strengthening and knowledge management.

Intervention and Implementation Research as the main emphasis of TDR’s new strategy, focuses on the systematic approach to understanding and addressing barriers to effective implementation of health interventions, strategies and policies. The need to address implementation bottlenecks is often greatest in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs), where health systems are weak or non-existent. Building capacities to overcome such bottlenecks is increasingly important in order to achieve universal health coverage and the sustainable development goals

In this vein, WHO/TDR has supported the development of Regional Training Centres in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to incorporate in their curricula a package of skill-building courses and train-the-trainer programmes in their respective regions.

In Africa, University of Ghana School of Public Health (UG/SPH) is the Regional Training Centre and University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho is the Satellite Regional Training Centre supported by WHO/TDR.
