University Of Ghana Holds 2018 Matriculation Ceremony

The University of Ghana held a matriculation ceremony on Saturday, September 22, 2018 to welcome about 12,000 newly admitted students pursuing various academic programmes in all the University’s campuses.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu in an address congratulated the fresh men and women for their ardent performance to qualify for admission into the University, which is the only university in Ghana to be ranked in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the top ranked University in West Africa.

The Vice-Chancellor further admonished the matriculants to contribute their quota to enhance the image of the University, to participate fully in all activities and be committed to their studies. He further encouraged the students to own the institution and ensure that their conduct remain a compliment to the development of the University.

The Vice-Chancellor further gave an assurance to the students that the University will mentor and educate them to achieve their aims for gaining admission into the University of Ghana.

Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu noted that for the 2018/2019 academic year, the University received a total of 51,321 applications; 43,215 undergraduate and 8,106 graduate applications. For undergraduate admission, the University admitted a total of 28,149 applicants. 11,216 comprising of 5,388 female and 5,828 males students had registered as at the time of Matriculation.

2,462 applicants gained admission to pursue graduate programmes. A total of 1,595 comprising of 921 males and 674 females had registered. The Vice-Chancellor noted that the University was on the verge of attaining the 50:50 ratio of female to male enrollment.

A total of 2531 applications were received from international students out of which 734 gained admissions and 306 registered. The Vice-Chancellor extended a warm welcome to the international students.

He further stated that the University through its affirmative action policies on women from less endowed schools, student athletes and students with special needs, gave a number of applicants opportunity for university education.

He noted that the University through the Student Financial Aid, offers financial assistance either through full or partial scholarship to students who are financially challenged. He encouraged students to visit the Students Financial Aid Office for assistance and to further apply for consideration when they are advertised.

He added that the Students’ Loan Trust Fund was also available to undergraduate students.

Earlier, the Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia, in a brief statement welcomed the freshmen and women to the 2018 matriculation ceremony. She mentioned that the ceremony was organised to matriculate students admitted for the academic year for courses leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees, diplomas and certificates at the University of Ghana in line with article 31 of the University of Ghana Act, 2010, Act 806.

The Registrar said she looks forward to see positive engagements and participation in University activities by the 2018 matriculation class throughout their stay.

She also stated that, in the course of the academic year, the University will hold separate matriculation ceremonies for students in the Distance Education and Sandwich programmes.

The Registrar later administered the matriculation oath to officially induct the matriculants as Junior Members of the University Community.

One of the matriculants, Mr. David Henry Boakye-Yeboah, a Medical student on behalf of the 2018/2019 fresh students spoke on their expectations of university life.

In his address, he expressed the joy and fulfillment on behalf of the fresh students for gaining admission into the University. He took the opportunity to congratulate his colleagues for the official induction as Junior Members of the University Community.

Mr. Boakye-Yeboah admonished his colleagues to have the consciousness that they had come this far to pursue various programmes in order to contribute to society and also to maximize their potentials. He later signed the Matricula on behalf of his colleague freshmen and women.

The ceremony was attended by officials of the University including the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs (ASA), Provosts of the Colleges, Deans and Directors, Heads of Department and Halls, Senior Tutors as well as other Members of Convocation.   The matriculation ceremony was witnessed by some parents and guardians. In attendance  was the Ghana Dance Ensemble and the University of Ghana Jubilee Choir.
