UG Invitation to First International Classics Conference

Members of the University community and the general public are invited to the 1st International Classics Conference in Ghana, and the inauguration of The Classical Association of Ghana on Thursday, October 11, 2018 from 9am to 11.30 am at the Great Hall, University of Ghana. The Opening Session will be chaired by Professor Samuel Agyei-Mensah, Provost of the College of Humanities, University of Ghana.
The Conference, which is on the theme “Classics and Global Humanities”, is the first of its kind in the field of Classics in Ghana and, given 70 years of Classical Studies at the University of Ghana, forms part of the Department’s celebration of the discipline over seven decades.
Classics in Africa and Ghana is finding new voice in reception studies and in the decolonisation of the discipline. The conference brings together scholars from Austria, Germany, Ghana, Netherlands, Nigeria, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States to explore ways in which this new voice can be sustained by exploring the cross-cultural engagement between Western civilisation and other cultures as well as the legacy and reception of the Classics in the Arab world, India, West Africa and South Africa; hence it brings different parts of the world into greater dialogue with each other. The conference will also discuss the future of the Classics discipline in a globalising society in relation to the success stories in South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. As part of the conference, we anticipate a network of the reception of the Classics that seeks to consolidate work done, and draws collaborations and funding for projects, in the field in Africa.
The keynote speaker for the conference is Professor Barbara Goff, a professor of Classics at the University of Reading, United Kingdom, who has done work on postcolonial classics and the reception of Greek tragedy and political thought. Her most recent work on the reception of Classics in Africa is ‘Your Secret Language’: Classics in the British Colonies of West Africa (2013).
The idea of the conference came into being last year when some members of the Classics faculties at the University of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast met to establish the Classical Association of Ghana to promote and sustain interest in the study of Classics in Ghana and Africa. The opening session will therefore include an address by Mr Paul Adom Otchere, our Guest Speaker and alumnus of Classics at the University of Ghana.
We have invited as Special Guest of Honour, His Excellency the Italian Ambassador to Ghana, as well as other personalities including the faculty, Deans, and alumni of the Department.
All are cordially invited
