The UPSA Language Centre Secretariat has begun operations.
 
The Centre which operates under the Department of Public Relations Management will oversee all the university’s communication-related courses including business communication, communication skills, English, French, public speaking as well as some local languages.
 
The Centre also seeks to empower students to acquire good command over languages and critical thinking skills needed for academic and work environment by providing unmatched training and practice in language acquisition.
 
Coordinator for the Centre, Mohammed Sadat says all is set for the smooth take-off of the language lab and he is looking forward to welcoming the first batch of students.
 
“The Centre has been receiving a lot of calls from interested individuals since it was launched two months ago, but we needed to put the Secretariat in order first. Now I can confirm all is set and admission into the various courses is currently underway,” he said.
 
Mr Sadat also revealed that apart from the English and French language courses, his outfit will also organize language workshops and seminars for corporate entities; and run translation services in local languages such as Akan, Ga, Ewe and Hausa.
 
The course structure according to the coordinator has been made flexible to accommodate people from all literacy background. He, therefore, urged interested students or organizations to take advantage of its morning, evening and weekend sessions.
 
“No prior knowledge or qualification is needed. Any interested applicant can just walk in to take the course. We also have tailor-made courses for students where we assess one’s need and then design a special course to suit that person,” Mr Sadat noted.
 
The French language lead Lecturer, Stevens Justice Avenyo responding to the uniqueness of the programmes, added that the UPSA Language Centre offers course specificity which meets the professional needs of its applicants.
 
“If you are in the maritime business (for instance), we give you French language for maritime purposes. If you are into banking, we offer you French lessons to suit your banking needs as well. The same applies to applicants from commerce, tourism et al,” he explained.
 
Another lecturer at the Centre, Awute Andreas believes the presence of experienced lecturers like himself and his other colleagues will offer students a conducive learning atmosphere.
 
One of the foremost students and a principal nurse at the UPSA Clinic, Rose Therra expressed her joy for the establishment of the Language Centre and says she looks forward to improving her French-speaking proficiency at the end of the course.
 
“I am happy to be the first student of this Centre. As a nurse, I interact a lot with patients from diverse backgrounds, so I have always looked up for the opportunity of polishing my French language proficiency at an institution where I can learn and work at the same time with ease,” she said.
 
The centre was inaugurated in August this year by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey.
