MSc Development Planning and Management (Spring Regular) / (Weekend Programme)  

The SPRING programme is open to Planners, Managers, Administrators and other related professionals, with a Bachelor’s Degree in the Second Class Upper Division and above or its equivalent from a recognized institution in relevant programmes including the following:

  • Planning
  • Development Studies/Integrated Development Studies
  • Social Studies
  • Agriculture
  • Renewable Natural Resources
  • Economics
  • Civil Engineering
  • Geography
  • Sociology
  • Land Economy
  • Business and Public Administration
  • Environmental Studies
  • Any other relevant programmes

Admission Requirement

Candidates with Second Class Lower Division in the relevant fields of study may also apply for consideration. However, all applicants must have a minimum of one year post-graduation experience in industry or research and must pass an interview before gaining admission into the programme.

The Weekend SPRING Programmes which are run on Saturday/Sunday for two years, are suitable for applicants who may be currently working and those who are actively seeking for jobs. Upon admission, students enrolled in the SPRING Weekend programme are required to pay WEEKEND fee of GHC6, 000 per year to the Department (subject to a review), in addition to other university charges.

The fees for the DEPP (Regular) programme will be assessed in due course.

Any candidate who fails to complete the programme within the two year period will pay additional pro-rated fees to the Department of Planning, aside any additional fees assessed by Graduate School.

MSc  Development Policy and Planning (DEPP – Regular) / (DEPP – Weekends)

Admission Requirement

A Bachelor’s Degree in the Second Class Upper Division and above or its equivalent from a recognized institution in relevant programmes including the following:

Master of Philosophy in Development Studies (Regular) / (Weekends)

Admission Requirement

These two-year programmes are open to a limited number of high caliber candidates with First Class Undergraduate Degrees or good Second Class (Upper Division) from reputable institutions in relevant courses including the following:

  • Development Studies/Integrated Development Studies
  • Agriculture
  • Renewable Natural Resources
  • Economics
  • Geography
  • Sociology
  • Land Economy
  • Environmental Studies

Candidates with Second Class Lower Division in the relevant fields of study may also apply for consideration. Candidates who did not write a thesis at the undergraduate level, and/or those who wrote group projects may only be admitted under special circumstances. In addition, all applicants must have a minimum of one year’s post-graduation experience in industry or research and must have well-developed research proposals on contemporary development issues in their area of interest.

Shortlisted applicants must pass an interview selection process. All selected candidates for the programme may be required to take core and specified coursework and must meet specific benchmarks specified by the Department in order to meet the graduating requirements.

The Weekend MPhil Programme which is run on Saturday/Sunday for two years, is suitable for applicants who may be currently working and those who are actively seeking for jobs. Upon admission, students enrolled in the MPhil Weekend programme are required to pay WEEKEND fee of GHC 6,000 per year to the Department (subject to a review), in addition to other university charges.

 Master of Philosophy in Planning (Regular) / (Weekends)

Potential applicants must have written a thesis on contemporary development issues at the undergraduate level.

All selected candidates for the programme may be required to take some core and specified coursework and must meet specific benchmarks specified by the Department in order to meet the graduating requirements. Candidates who did not write thesis at the undergraduate level and those who wrote group projects may only be admitted under special circumstances.

Admission Requirement

Applicants must hold a good Master of Philosophy degree in Development Studies or a relevant Master’s Degree from a recognized university which is acceptable to the Departmental Board.  A good master’s degree in the following related programmes are required for admission into the programme

Development Studies/Integrated Development Studies

  • Economics
  • Civil Engineering
  • Geography
  • Sociology
  • Land Economy
  • Environmental Studies
  • Any other relevant programmes

PhD in Planning (Full Time – 4 years)

PhD in Planning (Part Time –  5 years)

 Admission Requirement

Applicants must hold a good master’s degree in the following:

a.  Master of Philosophy in Planning

b. Master of Science in Development Planning and Management

c. Master of Science in Development Policy and Management

d. Any other Master’s degree in Planning from a recognized university which is acceptable to the Departmental Board.

In addition, all applicants must have a minimum of two years post-graduation experience in industry and must pass a selection interview before gaining admission into the programme. Candidates with proven research background (as reflected in publications in reputable journals) have added advantage.

Centre for Settlement Studies and Department of Planning

 Mphil – Urban Management Studies

The programme is open to all applicants but specifically targeted towards directors of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development; Staff of Town and Country Planning Department; Managers of Real Estate Companies; Managers of Waste Management Companies; Lands Commission Staff; Forestry Commission Staff, District, Municipal and Metropolitan Chief Executives; District, Municipal and Metropolitan Coordinating Directors, Planning Officers, Director of Works and Engineers.

An applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree from any recognized university with a minimum of two years working experience in recognized institutions that are in urban related professions. The applicant will also be required to submit a research proposal and when shortlisted for admission would be invited for an interview. Candidates from the following backgrounds are eligible to apply: Architecture, Public/Business Administration, Settlement/Development  Planning, Civil Engineering, Construction Technology and Management/Quantity Surveying and Construction Economics, Geography, Economics population Studies, Land Economy/Real Estate, Social/Political Science, Sociology/Psychology, and Development Studies.

Programme Structure

The MPhil in Urban Management Studies is a two-year programme structured along the lines of both taught and research. The first year is basically devoted to teaching courses that will be examinable at the end of each semester for the two semesters. Teaching will be done at weekends (Saturdays and Sundays).
