Certificate in Environmental Health and Waste Management is a two /three years programme offered in some universities in Ghana .

What is Environmental Health and Waste Management ?

Environmental health is the branch of public health that: focuses on the relationships between people and their environment; promotes human health and well-being; and fosters healthy and safe communities. Environmental health is a key part of any comprehensive public health system.

Waste management or Waste disposal is all the activities and actions required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. This includes amongst other things, collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste together with monitoring and regulation.

Direct Entry Requirement (SSSCE/WASSCE/GCE “O” Level & “A” Level Candidates)

Candidates must have CREDITS in THREE [3] SSSCE/WASSCE Core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science in addition to CREDITS in any THREE [3] relevant elective subjects in the following options;

Candidates must have FIVE credits at GCE O level or equivalent including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science, General Science, Geography, Economics, Government. In addition, passes in THREE [3] GCE Advanced Level subjects: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Agricultural Science, Government, Economics and Geography.

Maintaining a healthy environment is central to increasing quality of life and years of healthy life. Globally, 23% of all deaths and 26% of deaths among children under age 5 are due to preventable environmental factors.

How is waste management linked to environmental health?

Deposited waste is normally compacted. Some landfills use gas extraction to pump gas out for the use of electricity generation.

While most of these forms of waste management are convenient methods, they have a negative impact on the environment due to the emission of gaseous pollutants from degradation processes.
