WAEC Ghana GBCE Exams

ELIGIBILITY

The General Business Certificate Examination is available to both school and private candidates, ie. Candidates attending schools that prepare them for the examination and candidates who study privately towards the examination.

SUBJECTS FOR THE EXAMINATIONThe examination is conducted on a Single Subject Entry basis as well as on Group Entry basis.

Subjects for the Examination

The examination is conducted on a Single Subject Entry basis as well as on Group Entry basis.

Single Subject Entry – A candidate may enter for any number of the following subjects of his/her choice:

  • Business Law
  • Business Mathematics
  • Commerce
  • Cost Accounting
  • Economics
  • English Language
  • Financial Accounting
  • Information Technology
  • Marketing
  • Office Practice
  • Shorthand
  • Typewriting
  • Integrated Science
  • Social Studies

A certificate is awarded to a candidate who obtains at least a pass in any subject offered in the examination.

Group Entry: A candidate may enter for a group certificate consisting of a minimum of two compulsory and three optional subjects in the following areas:

 

(a)     ACCOUNTING OPTION

English Language

 

Optional Subjects (Any three)

Business Mathematics

Commerce

Business Law

Economics

Cost Accounting

 

(b)    BUSINESS STUDIES OPTION

Compulsory Subjects

English language

Optional Subjects (Any three)

Business Law

Office Practice

(c)    SECRETARIAL STUDIES OPTION

Compulsory Subjects

Shorthand

Typewriting

English Language

Social StudiesIntegrated Science and Information Technology may be added to the optional subjects.

The subject groups are reviewed from time to time or when new subjects are introduced into the examination scheme.

 (3)   Grading

There are six alphabetical grades in order of merit from Grade A to Grade F, Grade A being the highest and Grade F the lowest. The first five grades – A, B, C, D, E, – are pass grades. Grade F represents a failure.

(4)   Conditions for the Award of Certificates

The General Business Certificate is awarded to a candidate who obtains at least a pass in a subject offered in the examination. The Group Certificate is awarded to a candidate who obtains passes in all the relevant subjects at one sitting. A candidate who is unable to satisfy the criterion for the award of a Group Certificate is awarded a certificate for each of the subjects passed.

ADVANCED BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (ABCE)

(1)    Eligibility

The Advanced Business Certificate Examination is available to School Candidates as well as candidates who study privately towards the examination.

Candidates who have obtained passes in the relevant subjects at the GCE ‘O’ Level/SSSCE/WASSCE/General Business Certificate/Royal Society of Arts Stage II/London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Stage II Level may be considered as eligible candidates for the examination.

 

(2)    Subjects for the Examination

The examination, like the General Business Certificate Examination is conducted on Single Subject Entry basis as well as Group Entry basis.

The Advanced Business Certificate is awarded to a candidate who obtains at least a pass in a subject offered in the examination. A certificate is awarded for each subject passed.

(b)    Group Entry (Diploma)

The Diploma option of the ABCE involves a combination of three (3) compulsory and two (2) optional subjects as follows:

(3)    Conditions for the Award of Diploma

A candidate who passes all the three compulsory and two optional subjects in two sittings within a maximum period of two calendar years from the date of the first registration will be awarded a DIPLOMA certificate.

A candidate who is unable to obtain a pass in all the Subjects within the stipulated period of  two years from the date of the first registration will be issued single Advanced Business Certificates for each subject in which he/she obtains a pass.
